Book Vending Machine Encourages Positive Behaviors and Reading
“I get to keep this book all for me?!?” exclaims a 2nd grade student clutching a brand-new copy of Unicorn Diaries. Other students stare in amazement and anticipation to have their turn to use their golden token in the new vending machine. However, this is no ordinary vending machine. This machine vends food for the brain – BOOKS!
Thirteen students were present for the inaugural Book Worm Vending Machine ceremony where their positive behavior was recognized with the gift of literature. Principal Tammy Peterson wanted to link social responsibility with engagement in reading. Lincoln students can earn positive behavior slips for making safe, responsible, and respectful choices.
When students receive the slips, they bring them to the library to receive their golden token to get a book from the vending machine. Then, the students head to the office where they will call home with Mrs. Peterson to share their success.
Developing literacy skills at an early age has a positive impact on the academic and social success of students. The Foundation is proud to support literacy in our schools and help create literacy connections between school and home.
DPS Marketing Director, Marisa Riesinger, helps two Lincoln students choose books from the Book Worm Vending Machine. The vending machine was purchased through funds from the Annual Teacher Grant Program.
